Angell has helped us appreciate baseball by reaching deep into our chests and saying what we feel but cannot quite convey why we care so much about this odd and wonderful game. Joe Posnanski (Joe Blogs Baseball)
Over the past several days, many, many baseball writers have written about Roger Angell, one of baseballs best chroniclers, who died at Friday at the age of 101.
I’ve chosen to link to Posnanski’s post today as it captures why Angell stands in the very top tier of baseball’s best writers.

Thanks for sharing that tribute to Roger Angell. I was introduced to his baseball writing genius some years ago by reading his book about the 1972-76 seasons, “Five Seasons: A Baseball Companion”.

That was beautiful. Thanks so much for raising it up. I am reading it sitting just 45 minutes away (if you are in a small motorboat) from Brooklyn, where he spent so many summers. I still marvel that the NYT obit noted that he was a fan of the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets (and a few others). How did the man sleep? Quite well, I guess, given that he made it to 101.

Rick, thanks for the link (although for some reason it didn’t work from the email). I always loved reading Angell’s end of the season novellas (they were that long) in the New Yorker. What a writer!
