It certainly looks as if we have a World Series that is worthy of its name, at least if the first two games are any indication. I know those of you who are Dodger fans would have preferred to have won the second game, but for those of us who aren’t so connected to either team, it’s wonderful to see both teams operating at their best and the outcome in doubt.
In the meantime, I need a bit of help in determining how to think about the winner of MillersTime Contest #6: Who will be the two teams in the World Series in 2017 and which team will win it all? (Tie-Breaker: Name the five teams in each league who will make the playoffs.)
Four of you are in the running to win this contest, the one with the biggest prize of the six contests: One ticket to the 2018 World Series:
N.L. (vis Matt Galati): Picked the Dodgers and the Astros to be in the WS with the Dodgers winning it all.
E.T. Picked the Astros and the Mets with the Astros winning it all.
N.N. picked the Cubs and Astros, with the Cubs winning it alll.
C.B. picked the Astro and the Cubs with the Astros the victors.
Obviously, if the Dodgers win, then N.L. is the winner.
But if the Astros win, I’m not sure which of the above should be declared the winner.
Any advice, left in the Comment section of this post or sent directly to my email (Samesty84@gmail.com) would be definitely welcomed.
Thanx.
PS. I’ve already announced winners in two of the contests. If you missed those posts, see:
PPS: Contests 1, 2 & 3 have yet to be decided and will take some time.

I think if the Astros win you have to go with CB – as they picked the correct victor which I believe is most important, but were also the closest in picking a team that almost made it to the WS. (The mets weren’t even in the playoffs).

Agreed, gotta be CB

Agree it should be CB. Mets were a disaster. But NL should get some recognition for having picked both teams correctly.

My New Year’s resolution is, for once, to retain my Miller’s Time Baseball Contest picks where I can actually find them by season’s end. I only recall my true, or false, answer to the number of triple plays in 2017. I went with the “over 4” and crushed it as there were 7 for the second year in a row (dumber runners, stronger arms?).
Anyway, even if that CB is not me, we CB’s gotta stick together, so, CB it is (also, see previous posts re: actual WS victor & Cubs vs Mets). In any case, I’m rooting for Houston (forgive me Dave Roberts!).

Aren’t there some interesting “tie” predictions somewhere we could pull from?

Yes, agreed: CB would be the winner!

R,
I say:
No winner if Dodgers don’t take the Series.
You some kind of a wimp and want to give losers a prize like participation trophies to Little Leaguers who make errors and strike out?
In competitions there are winners and losers.
If the highest grade is D+ that doesn’t make the slacker a winner.
Or do you, soft hearted one,
think differently?

Have to say N.L. should win regardless!

Incredibly biased, but, my vote is that Nick should have this locked up already, having named the two teams that are in the WS.

I think NL is the winner even if the Astros win the W.S. The question is two part and neither part can be construed as more important than the other. So if the Astros win, neither NL or CB correctly guessed both parts of the question, but each got one part right. So the question for me becomes, whose prediction was harder to make and have come true from a statistical standpoint?
Assume for the sake of simplicity that all teams had an equal probability of making it to the W.S. (I know that’s not true, but in the pre-season, the Astros and Dodgers were both predicted to win their divisions, so the probability of either making it to the Series was roughly equal). In that case, the chance of the Astros making it to the Series was 6.7% (a 1 in 15 chance), and the probability of their winning the W.S. was 3.35%. Meanwhile, the probability of both the Dodgers and Astros making it to the W.S. was only 0.45%. A truly rare event!
So in light of the fact that NL’s prediction was less likely to occur, and therefore a harder bet to make, I’d give the prize to NL.

I would go with NL in any event, it is very tough to get the winners of both leagues right.

Land said: The true skill or luck was naming the two League winners over a 162 game season There were so many entrants who didn’t make it that far, so picking the winner in each league is truly awesome. Once they are in the Series of a mere seven games, one of them is guaranteed to win. and since these are the best teams in baseball (by definition), it is almost irrelevant who that is.
Reward the splendid accomplishment and toot the horns for NL

I am in agreement with Monica, CB should win, for the reasons she expressed. And CB certainly beats NN, not the first time that has happened.

I have no new ideas but am interested in which way you decide
LL said:
Either ET or CB.
Ask them to decide on a tie breaker question.
Bruce Griffin said:
The contest asked 2 questions and did not weight either as more important. If the Astros win, then NL, CB, and ET all got one of the 2 correct. Time to go to the tie-breaker.
Matt said:
I don’t get why this is controversial. The question was “Who will be the two teams in the World Series in 2017 and which team will win it all?”
NL was the only person at the start of the series who named both teams. So, at that point, he had locked it up, as no one else in the contest had named both teams.

I would vote for CB if the Astros win it. I agree with the logic that the Cubs made it further in the playoffs than the Mets so…
