Trevor Noah is a brilliant young man with wisdom waaaay beyond his years.
I think he has distilled the core of the problem.
Black people had their lives looted from them as slaves. Black people had their lives looted from them through 100 years of Jim Crow. Black people have never had equal access to rule of law protecting them and their families anywhere in the US. Things are better than under slavery, and under the legal oppression of Jim Crow. Things are not equally good anywhere in the US, and never has been.
There is more fairness now than ever before…..and this is where we are.
I think his interpretation of the social agreement is absolutely right on the mark, and his understanding of what happens inside a person when the social agreement is breached so lop-sidedly.
My conclusion? VOTE! We need better leadership in every level of this society! The good people in leadership need more good people to work with!
Thank you, Richard:
After studying Hobbs, Locke and Rousseau as an undergraduate and as the son of a political philosopher, I’ve long been driven by the concept of and the defects in our social contract.
Noah provided an eloquent demonstration of the case for maintaining and honoring this principle – for all.
His opening reference to dominos was the perfect place to start.
Thanks, again
All I had to do is have an evening biracial party in a white neighbor. The street out side my property was filled with police. A neighbor had reported I was endanger and being held against me will. After explanations, the party disbanded at 9 pm and I was given a ticket for excessive noise.
Today I still have biracial parties which include Hispanics and dark skinned individuals. The time has been changed to Sundays at 4 pm. The white neighborhood is notified and invited. To date not one has accepted.
